Kobo opens PDFs — that's not the same as reading them
Every Kobo can open a PDF, and every Kobo owner learns the same lesson: the page renders as a fixed image. On a Clara’s 6-inch screen an A4 page becomes pinch-zoom archaeology — no font control, no ComfortLight-friendly reflow, no chapter menu, and the progress bar counts print pages instead of your reading position.
EPUB is Kobo’s native language. Convert the PDF properly and you get everything the device was designed for: your choice of font and size, real chapter navigation, working footnotes and accurate reading stats.
PDF to Kobo in three steps
- 1
Convert the PDF to EPUB above
The AI rebuilds chapters, table of contents and footnotes — including OCR for scanned books — and outputs a standard EPUB 3 that Kobo reads natively.
- 2
Copy the EPUB to your Kobo
Plug the Kobo in over USB and drag the file into the device's root folder — done. On newer devices you can skip the cable: link Google Drive or Dropbox in More → Settings, or use Kobo's built-in web browser to download the file.
- 3
Eject and read
The book appears in My Books with cover, chapters and font controls, exactly like a Kobo store purchase.
What about KEPUB?
KEPUB is Kobo’s enhanced flavour of EPUB, used by books from the Kobo store: it adds faster page turns, Kobo’s reading statistics and slightly different highlighting. Sideloaded standard EPUBs work perfectly — KEPUB is an optional upgrade, not a requirement.
If you want KEPUB features, the free community tool kepubify converts EPUB to KEPUB in one step. Note the order of operations: kepubify only accepts EPUB — it can’t read a PDF. So the pipeline for a PDF is always PDF → EPUB (here) → optionally kepubify. Calibre’s Kobo plugins can automate that last hop if you use Calibre to manage your library.
