Why PDFs make bad ebooks
A PDF is a fixed-layout format: every word is pinned to an exact position on a printed page. E-readers want the opposite — reflowable text that adapts to any screen size, font and margin setting. When you open a PDF on a 6-inch e-reader you get microscopic text, endless pinch-zooming, and page breaks in the middle of sentences.
Most converters “fix” this by extracting raw text page by page. The result keeps the problems that were baked into the print layout: headers and page numbers spliced into paragraphs, footnotes floating mid-chapter, hyphen- ated words split across lines, and a table of contents that is just a picture of one.

PDF To Book vs Calibre
Calibre is superb free software for managing an ebook library — and its own documentation is honest that PDF is its hardest input format. Calibre converts mechanically: it extracts whatever text the PDF exposes, in the order it finds it, with no understanding of chapters or footnotes, and no OCR for scanned pages.

What is EPUB, exactly?
EPUB is the open ebook standard maintained by the W3C — essentially a zipped website with the book’s text, images, styles and navigation. Because the text is reflowable, your e-reader controls font, size, margins and theme, and the book always fits the screen. It is the native format of Kobo, Apple Books, Google Play Books and nearly every reading app.
Kindle accepts EPUB too: since 2022, Amazon’s Send to Kindle takes EPUB directly and converts it on the fly — it’s the format Amazon itself recommends for personal documents.
