Why sending a PDF straight to Kindle disappoints

You can email a PDF to your Kindle. What arrives is either the frozen print page (tiny text, endless zooming) or, if you let Amazon convert it, a text extraction with the structure stripped out. Both paths are documented pain:

  • Users on Amazon’s own forums report losing the entire table of contents when Amazon converts their PDF — the book arrives as one long, unnavigable scroll.
  • Amazon’s Send to Kindle help pages advise removing “large tables or tables with complex formatting” before sending — the converter can’t handle them.
  • Footnotes, running headers and page numbers from the print layout end up spliced into the middle of paragraphs.

EPUB is what Kindle wants now

Why does my PDF look bad on Kindle?

PDF is a print format: text is pinned to an A4/letter page that doesn't fit a 6-inch screen. Kindle either shows the page shrunken (unreadable) or extracts the text mechanically (structure lost). Converting to EPUB first rebuilds the book as reflowable text that adapts to the screen.

MOBI or EPUB for Kindle in 2026?

EPUB. Send to Kindle stopped accepting MOBI in August 2022. MOBI only matters for very old Kindles loaded over USB.

Will page numbers match the printed book?

No — reflowable text doesn't have fixed pages; Kindle shows locations and estimated pages based on your font settings. If you need exact print pagination for citations, keep the original PDF alongside your reading copy.

Is there a size limit?

Send to Kindle accepts files up to 200MB. Our converter accepts PDFs up to 100MB, and the EPUB that comes out is almost always far smaller than the source PDF.
