Why sending a PDF straight to Kindle disappoints
You can email a PDF to your Kindle. What arrives is either the frozen print page (tiny text, endless zooming) or, if you let Amazon convert it, a text extraction with the structure stripped out. Both paths are documented pain:
- Users on Amazon’s own forums report losing the entire table of contents when Amazon converts their PDF — the book arrives as one long, unnavigable scroll.
- Amazon’s Send to Kindle help pages advise removing “large tables or tables with complex formatting” before sending — the converter can’t handle them.
- Footnotes, running headers and page numbers from the print layout end up spliced into the middle of paragraphs.
The fix is to do the conversion before Amazon touches the file: rebuild the PDF as a structured EPUB, then let Send to Kindle do what it’s good at — delivery.
The PDF-to-Kindle workflow that works
- 1
Convert your PDF to EPUB here
Drop the file above. The AI detects chapters, rebuilds the table of contents, fixes footnotes and cleans out print artifacts — the things Amazon's converter loses.
- 2
Send the EPUB to your Kindle
Use Send to Kindle: the web uploader at amazon.com/sendtokindle, the mobile app's share sheet, or email the file to your @kindle.com address. EPUB is accepted directly (max 200MB).
- 3
Read it like a real Kindle book
The book appears in your library with working chapter navigation, adjustable fonts, Whispersync position — everything a store-bought Kindle book has.
EPUB is what Kindle wants now
Since 2022, Amazon’s official personal-document format is EPUB: Send to Kindle dropped MOBI support in August 2022 and accepts EPUB everywhere. If a guide tells you to convert PDF to MOBI for your Kindle, it’s years out of date — we cover that history on the PDF to MOBI page.
One nuance for Kindle Scribe owners: PDFs keep their fixed layout, which is what you want for margin-writing on documents — but for reading books, a reflowable EPUB with adjustable type is far more comfortable. Convert books, keep forms as PDFs.
