What happened to MOBI

MOBI is the ebook format Amazon inherited when it bought Mobipocket in 2005. It served the first Kindles well, but it’s a 20-year-old container with poor support for modern typography and layout — and Amazon itself has moved on:

  • August 2022: Send to Kindle stopped accepting MOBI files — and started accepting EPUB.
  • KDP, Amazon’s publishing arm, no longer takes MOBI for reflowable book submissions either.
  • Every current Kindle device and app receives personal documents as EPUB via Send to Kindle.

Most sites offering “PDF to MOBI” conversion simply haven’t updated their pages since. Converting a PDF to MOBI in 2026 usually produces a file the official delivery pipeline will refuse.

Do you still need MOBI? A 60-second answer

Honest note: for the genuine legacy case — sideloading onto a pre-2012 Kindle over USB — free Calibre can produce a MOBI, and we’d point you there rather than pretend EPUB fits a device that can’t read it. For every other Kindle, EPUB through Send to Kindle gives you better typography, working chapters and library sync — the full workflow is on our PDF to Kindle page.

Why the EPUB you make here beats a MOBI from 2015-era tools

Old PDF-to-MOBI converters share the weakness of all mechanical converters: they dump text page by page, losing chapters, table of contents and footnotes, and they can’t read scanned pages at all. The AI pipeline here rebuilds the book’s actual structure — chapter detection, navigable TOC, cleaned footnotes, OCR for scans — and outputs a modern EPUB 3. When Send to Kindle converts that EPUB for your device, all of that structure survives.

Frequently asked questions

Is MOBI dead?

As a delivery format, effectively yes: Amazon's own pipeline stopped accepting it in August 2022 and modern Kindle features (enhanced typesetting, modern fonts) never came to MOBI. Old devices can still read old MOBI files — the format is retired, not erased.

Can my Kindle still open a MOBI file?

Sideloaded over USB, most Kindles still render legacy MOBI. But you lose Send to Kindle delivery, cross-device sync and modern typography — which is why EPUB is the practical choice for any Kindle that supports it.

MOBI vs AZW3 vs EPUB — what's the difference?

MOBI is the 2005-era Mobipocket format; AZW3 (KF8) is Amazon's 2011 successor with better formatting; EPUB is the open standard everyone else uses — and since 2022, the format Amazon accepts for personal documents, converting it to its internal format on delivery. You send EPUB; Amazon handles the rest.

So why does this page exist if you don't output MOBI?

Because thousands of people search “PDF to MOBI” every month following outdated advice, and most converter sites happily sell them a file Send to Kindle will bounce. We'd rather explain what changed and give you the format that actually works.
